Kate Marino’s senior year internship at the District Attorney’s Office isn’t exactly glamorous—more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen. The River Point Boys are all anyone can talk about. Despite their damning toxicology reports the morning of the accident, the DA wants the boys’ case swept under the rug. He owes his political office to their powerful families.
Kate won’t let that happen. Digging up secrets without revealing her own is a dangerous line to walk; Kate has her own reasons for seeking justice for Grant. As she and Stone investigate—the ageing prosecutor relying on Kate to see and hear what he cannot—she realizes that nothing about the case—or the boys—is what it seems. Grant wasn’t who she thought he was, and neither is Stone’s prime suspect. As Kate gets dangerously close to the truth, it becomes clear that the early morning accident might not have been an accident at all—and if Kate doesn’t uncover the true killer, more than one life could be on the line…including her own.
This Is Our Story was
one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. I really liked the idea of figuring
out a who dun it case.
Ashley’s writing was engaging and flowed quite smoothly. I
found that all of the voices matched the age group presented. I really liked
Kate straight out of the gate. She is smart, hardworking, and driven to find
the truth of what really happened at River Point. I did find some of her
actions really questionable, like when she would go off on her own to try and
spy on the boys and some shady characters. That seemed really dangerous for a
high school girl to do alone. At the very least she should have brought someone
with her so that she was not alone. There were also instances where she was
threatened a few times, but she kept it to herself and did not involve the
police. That was understandable because some of the people in charge were quite
corrupt but I’m sure at least one of them would have helped.
The boys were very interesting. We learned a little about
each one through the police interrogations and snippets from people they knew.
The added mystery was the insertion of an anonymous POV from one of the boys at
the end of each chapter. That POV was very dark and creepy, and it added
another layer to the story because it was a race to figure out who was
speaking.
The ending was the biggest disappoint for me. Based on the
synopsis, I thought there was going to be a huge twist at the end and I thought
Kate would be in more danger than she really was. Nothing major really happened
except the reveal at the last possible second. Kate never seemed to be in a
real danger other than the anonymous threats to her and someone else. It just
really didn’t feel like the heart pounding thriller that the blurb made it out
to be.
I will say that even though I thought I had figured it out,
I was wrong. The inclusion of the POV chapter, plus Kate’s relationship with
one of the characters really had me guessing the entire time.
This Is Our Story definitely
had a unique narration format with police interviews, text messages, the creepy
POV, and of course the DA assistant’s inputs.
You might be disappointed in the ending like I was, but the
rest of the book was really good. Give it a chance and see what you think.
I have to give a special shoutout to the cover artist, because the cover is initially what made me want to read the book!
