Danica planned to use beauty, blackmail, and a glittering drug to control her own fate. Her escape from the twisted world of the Palace of Versailles was perfectly orchestrated and paid for. Or so she thought.
Betrayed by the man who had promised her freedom, Dani is now married to the murderous King. It's a terrifying position to be in...and yet it's oddly intoxicating. Power may be an even stronger drug than Glitter--a drug Dani can't resist, in the form of secrets, manipulation, and sabotage.
I
n her new position at the head of the court, Dani must ask herself who she really is. Can she use her newfound power to secure her real love, Saber's freedom and a chance at a life together outside the palace? Or is being Queen too addictive to give up?
** I received this book free from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**
Glitter was such an addictive ride with one heck of a cliffhanger. I needed the next installment because of it so I could read what would happen to Danica after Reginald betrayed her.
Shatter starts off right where Glitter left off. Danica is now married to her enemy, the King, and must learn to accept this if she wants to keep Saber around. Meanwhile, she has to deal with Reginald's increasing pressure to sell the Glitter drug to her courtiers. The problem is, Danica wants to leave Sonoma-Versailles and Glitter forever, but must find a way to do so before it's too late.
The concept of Sonoma-Versailles was my favorite part of this series. While there were tons of unanswered questions from book one, some of those questions were answered, like how they became so successful. Sometimes I wanted this world to be real, with their glittering jewels and Marie Antoinette era dresses and parties, but then we finally get to see the surface of their world, and it's not pretty.
I loved Danica this time around. She started off a broken shell of a girl but soon realized that she had more power than many people could ever dream about. She used that power to help her cause, and she sometimes was ruthless, It wasn't to be malicious, she was only trying to help those she loved and she would go to any lengths to do just that.
The biggest issue with Shatter was Saber. To be honest, their whole romance was boring because I didn't remember him that well from book one, which doesn't bode well. He was annoying because Danica was literally putting her life on the line for him time and time again and all he did was scold her like she was a child. I have no idea what Danica saw in him. I was hoping that she would rule alongside Justin because even though they both had their faults, they were actually a great team, and their relationship was much more interesting than her and Saber's.
I wanted a little more with the ending since I believe this is only just a duology. It would have been nice to read about what happened to Sonoma-Versailles after the book ended, and what happened to all its residents. Lord Aaron and Duke Spencer were two of my favorite characters but they did not get enough page time, especially after they "disappeared."
Overall this was a very entertaining series with plenty of twists and turns. Court intrigue and politics were around in abundance, and great characters growth from Danica made it well worthwhile.
I look forward to reading more from Aprilynne Pike in the future.
